Crowd Data & Predictions

Where does the crowd data come from?

CrowdAvoid’s crowd levels are calculated from a combination of sources: historical visitor data, seasonal tourism patterns, local event calendars, and cruise ship arrival schedules. A custom algorithm analyses these factors together to give reliable crowd predictions for any attraction at any time.

The upcoming Smart Traveler tier adds real-time sensor-based foot traffic data for even greater accuracy.

What are the four crowd levels?

CrowdAvoid uses four crowd levels to help you plan:

  • Low Very few people, short or no lines. A great time to visit.
  • Moderate Some crowds but a pleasant experience with manageable lines.
  • Busy Noticeably crowded with longer lines and wait times.
  • Very Crowded Heavy crowds and long wait times. Consider visiting earlier or later.
How do I check crowd levels by hour, day, or month?

Tap any attraction to open its detail page. Under the crowd level bar, tap the orange View Crowd by Hour / Day / Month button to see expected crowd levels for any hour, day, or month of the year.

What does the trend indicator mean?

The trend indicator on each attraction card shows whether crowd levels are expected to rise or fall. A downward arrow means crowds are easing — a great time to head over. An upward arrow means they’re building — you may want to wait or explore a quieter nearby spot first.

How do cruise ship schedules affect crowd levels?

Cruise ships can transform a quiet morning into an overwhelmingly busy one. Thousands of passengers typically disembark between 9am and 10am and flood the same key attractions. CrowdAvoid factors in cruise ship arrival schedules, so you’ll see these spikes reflected in predictions on port days.

If you’re staying overnight, early morning (before 9am) or evening visits are the best strategy on cruise days.

Using the App

How do I find attractions near me?

Use the search bar on the Explore page to search by name, or browse by category and filter by crowd level or trend. Tap the Map button in the bottom navigation to center the map on your location and discover nearby attractions.

How do I plan an itinerary with CrowdAvoid?

On any attraction card, tap the itinerary icon (to the right of the notification bell). A calendar pop-up lets you select your day and time. CrowdAvoid suggests preset times with the lowest expected crowds — tap any preset to add it instantly. Your itinerary can be exported as a PDF to save, print, or share.

How do I get crowd alerts for my favourite attractions?

Tap the notification bell icon on any attraction card to subscribe to crowd alerts. You’ll receive push notifications for the next 12 hours whenever the crowd level changes. To stop alerts, double-tap the bell icon or manage notifications in your device settings.

Can I use CrowdAvoid on a laptop or desktop?

Yes — the full web app is available at app.crowdavoid.com. It works on any modern browser on Mac, Windows, or Chromebook with no download required.

Crowd-Busting Tips

What time of day has the fewest crowds?

The first hour after opening is consistently the quietest. Crowds build steadily through mid-morning and peak between 11am and 3pm. The last 90 minutes before closing are often surprisingly calm as day visitors leave.

Which days of the week are the least crowded?

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are reliably the quietest days at most tourist attractions worldwide. Weekends — especially Sunday afternoons — are almost always the busiest. Monday can be tricky as many museums and sites are closed.

Which months are the busiest — and when is the best time to travel?

July and August are the peak months at virtually every major destination globally. December spikes around Christmas and New Year. For the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds:

  • April–May — warm, green, far fewer visitors than summer at most European and Mediterranean destinations.
  • September–October — arguably the best travel months: summer crowds gone, weather still excellent, prices lower.
  • November–early December — the quietest period at most destinations.
  • January–February — minimum crowds almost everywhere, with weather trade-offs by destination.

Use CrowdAvoid’s Month view to see the full year at a glance and pick the calmest window for your trip.

What should I do when an attraction shows Very Crowded?

A Very Crowded rating doesn’t mean your day is ruined — it means it’s time to be strategic:

  • Check the trend indicator — if crowds are falling, waiting 30–60 minutes can make a big difference.
  • Use the Hour view to find a calmer window and add it to your itinerary.
  • Flip your day — visit this attraction in the evening and do something quieter now.
  • Set a crowd alert and get notified when the level drops.
  • Explore the surrounding streets and viewpoints — often crowd-free even when the main site is packed.
